Hace 45 años que estuve en un ambiente Montessori de casa de niños, luego pase a taller hasta concluir la primaria. Con los años me fui interesando en la infancia y me forme como Guía Montessori de Comunidad Infantil, Casa de Niños y Taller.
I started my journey in Montessori 45 years ago, when I attended a Children’s House classroom when I was 3. I continued in Montessori through Lower Elementary and Upper Elementary. Over the years, I became interested in teaching, so I formed myself as a Guide for infants/toddlers/Young children’s community , Children’s House and Lower Elementary.

Hace 30 años que en la formación de Guías Montessori, escribía ensayos sobre las repercusiones de las pantallas de televisión en la vida de los niños. Recuerdo claramente el nombre de uno de los libros que en aquella época era un hitazo: “mi hijo ya no juega solo ve la TV”., me convertí por aquellos tiempos en una ferviente defensora del NO USO de pantallas.

Later on in my career, when I became  a teacher trainer myself, I wrote essays on the repercussions of excessive screen time on children’s development. I can clearly remember the name of one of the parenting books that at that time was a best seller in Mexico: “My child no longer plays, he only watches TV”. I became a passionate advocate for a SCREEN FREE  childhood.

Con los años y las experiencias en ambientes Montessori desde comunidad infantil hasta taller II, secundaria y educación superior, la percepción de las pantallas fue evolucionando. Aunque no nací en la época de las computadoras y celulares, puedo manejarlos, si bien no soy una experta, me he adaptado a los cambios que la globalización a puesto en marcha y las tendencias educativas fueron implementando dando respuesta a las necesidades de los mercados.

Within the years and experiences in the Montessori environment from Young Children’s Community, Elementary, Middle School and Higher Education , my perception of screens, their use and impact evolved.  Although I was not born in the computers and technology era, I wasn’t scared of them. I am not an expert but I have adapted to the changes that globalization has set and the implementations of educational trends that appeared in response to the need of the markert.

Durante todos los años como Guía, maestra, coordinadora académica, directora de centros escolares y madre de 4 hijos, fui y voy tomando diferentes posturas respecto al tema de pantallas. Respeto a las personas que deciden limitarlas, así como a quienes delimitan horarios e incluso a quienes lo dejan al libre demanda de los hijos, porque voy conociendo el contexto bajo el cual se toman estas decisiones.

During all these years as a Guide, Teacher, Academic Coordinator, Director and mother of 4 children, I’ve learned to let aside any judgment  regarding the use – or abuse-  of screens in the core of different families. I respect the people who decide to ban them as well as those who set limited schedules or even those who let the children decide, because I am aware about the context in which these decisions are made at the core of each family.

En todos los escenarios imaginables nunca hubiese pensado que me llegaría a tocar vivir una pandemia de la magnitud de la que se está viviendo. En el siglo XXI, la economía de los gigantes se ve amenazada por un virus COVID 19 que ha obligado a que las gentes permanezcan en sus hogares para cuidar su salud. Las escuelas se han cerrado en el mundo entero, esto es histórico y ha puesto en marcha  nuevos panoramas para padres, maestros e instituciones educativas.

In all the imaginable scenarios I would never have thought that I would have to live a pandemic of the magnitud that we are currently living in. In the XXI century the giants of the economy became threatened by COVID-19, a virus that forced people to stay home and take care of their health. Schools have closed all over the world, this is historical and this has set new scenarios for parents, teachers and educational Institutions.

Nadie se encuentra preparado para enfrentar una pandemia de esta naturaleza, hablando del mundo de los adultos, para los niños entre los 0 y 6 años que aún no hablan o empiezan a hacerlo es mucho peor la situación, al no tener el lenguaje suficiente para expresar lo que piensan y sienten se vuelve complejo entender una realidad que tampoco los adultos a su alrededor comprenden.

Nobody was prepared to face a pandemic of this nature. I see how children are one of the most vulnerable in this situation, not having developed their emotion control tools, or even enough language to express what they think and feel at this moment.  How can they understand a reality that the adults around them do not understand either? How can they cope with such uncertainty? Yes, it is true that kids have a radical capacity for living in the present moment, but that’s not the message that society has necessarily sent them all this time.

Evidentemente tampoco  me encontraba preparada para hacerlo, pero hay algo en lo que si estoy preparada y es para adaptarme a los cambios. Encontrar respuestas ante los problemas y de manera creativa ofrecer una solución. Esta condición de 

vida no es aleatoria ni circunstancial sino una consecuencia de haber sido formada en un ambiente Montessori desde niña.

I find myself one more time being prepared to be adaptable to changes, in order to be able to better guide children.  I have a mindset of finding answers to problems in a creative way. I think I owe that capacity to my  Montessori training and education.

Si, el Montessori te prepara para la vida y lo observo hoy de manera latente cuando hay que crear un nuevo modelo de atención desde  la virtualidad pero apegado a la pedagogía Montessori. No es una tarea fácil, pero encontramos una forma: Viable y respetuosa, que permite continuar el desarrollo integral de los niños, la vida social, estimulación del lenguaje y lo más grandioso que observo: TRABAJAMOS EN EQUIPO PADRES Y MAESTROS.

Yes, it is true: Montessori prepares you for life.  I see it today when it comes to creating from scratch a brand new online learning  curriculum based on the Montessori method. We found a way that is at the same time viable and respectful for the members of the family. It  allows  socialization time, language stimulation, encourages the development of children as a whole and the acquisition of content right for their age. But the greatest thing of all: it allows more than ever for Parents and Guides to work as a team.

Esto último siempre había sido una experiencia UTÓPICA, imposible de lograr o medianamente posible, sin embargo verlos día a día: cantar, sumarse a realizar las actividades, pintar, recortar, armar, jugar, bailar… ES LA MEJOR EXPERIENCIA QUE ESTÁ DEJANDO ESTE PROGRAMA VIRTUAL MONTESSORI.

Educators and Parents truly working in teams has been an utopian. But this new normal has allowed us Guides to share our knowledge, our resources and techniques -and even our lesson plans- so parents can perform a key role in this virtuality. Parents on the other side of the screen are able to observe their children in action. They are learning new information about what works for their kids in order to get engaged, the length of their concentration periods, their different ways of being during different times of the day, their different learning styles. We can call it a silver lining of the pandemic, or a brand new and exciting experience.

Los medios han dejado de tener trascendencia: LAS PANTALLAS tan penalizadas ahora son el vínculo que permite crear las experiencias y genera  la vida social así como las interacciones con propuestas pedagógicas, y ¿qué más da?, cuando vivimos en la abierta época de las INCERTIDUMBRES, donde nos percibimos tan leves, que la mortalidad no se percibe a la distancia, cercanos a la vejez, sino como una posibilidad que se encuentra a la vuelta de la casa.

The media is no longer evil.  The once so penalized  screens are now the ONLY link allowing us to create the connection experiences as well as interactions with pedagogical proposals. This is a new  era of uncertainties and of acceptance of our vulnerability. It’s a sensitive time where we have to make decisions for our own mental health  and stick to spaces and moments of the day where our hearts beat strongly, where the people  connected on the other side of the screen are there to express love, acts of kindness and joyful thoughts. 

No tengo un gran discurso para defender o criticar este o aquel programa, solo considero que en estos momentos tan sensibles es complejo privar o posicionarse en algún extremo respecto al deber ser. Creo que nos toca quedarnos en espacios y momentos del día donde nuestro corazón lata con fuerza, donde la gente que se conecte nos ame o exprese pensamientos bondadosos y de alegría, en esas experiencias que hagan llevadero este momento que parece interminable.

Puedo decirte que de nuevo bendigo ser niña Montessori, apuesto a cada minuto por seguir tras el telón pensando en el diseño de programas que permitan que las interacciones, interconexiones ocurran y si hay aprendizaje: cognitivo, social, cultural, etc., que maravilla, sino saberse parte de un grupo nos da alicientes para sobrevivir a la pandemia y contar en el futuro, como el Montessori nos prepara para la vida, adaptándonos a ella con los recursos y en las circunstancias que se presentan.

I can definitely say being a Montessori girl has been a blessing. Today I will continue to put all my knowledge, time, effort and passion behind the scene  designing a program that allows healthy interactions, interconnections, cognitive development and much more. Knowing myself as an essential part of a group, a tribe, gives me incentives to survive the pandemic today.  This is how Montessori prepares us for life.
